The craftsmanship was simply superb, exquisite and instantly appealed to the eye. The bright colors blended seamlessly and the elephant and bullock cart motifs had that classic touch of royalty and culture in it. Reams and reams of such borders and laces were displayed on several small shops in that crowded street of that equally crowded market.

We liked a particular border but had to go to another shop to find a plain saree of the right shade that highlighted the border. We were not very satisfied. We moved on to the next shop.

Interestingly this shopkeeper had a small selection of plain sarees of different textures and shades. We could pick a saree and a border all in one place. There were other customers who were placing orders for hand embroidery that needed to be done on the back of their Kurtis. These customers had brought in their own designs that they had got on Instagram.

They were very specific about the color combination and the pattern too and knew the exact dimensions of the design too. They were others who wanted places to be attached on their customized dupattas. And this shopkeeper was busy taking down all the orders without batting his eyes. He oozed confidence because he had a team of skilled women craftsmen working with him.
Here are some of the random inferences that we can infer from this lovely experience:

·      Rural India represents culture, tradition, skill, and talent now. Gone forever are the days when we dismissed our village folks as illiterate idle bumpkins who lived in abysmal conditions in dilapidated thatched huts.

·      Yes, the picture is slowly but surely changing for the better. Rural Indian folks understand the value of communicating in a language that is customer friendly. So they learn to speak in passable Hindi and understandable English.

·      Almost all their products are organic and eco-friendly which is in great demand all around the world these days.

·      Now comes the harsh reality. Rural Indian folks continue to struggle to find a decent market for all their exquisite craftsmanship.
